High crop yields and high quantities of sugar per acre
Sugar-beet growers in Switzerland produce crop yields that are well above the international average. Together, Swiss growers produce an annual average of around 32.4 to 35.4 tons of sugar beets per acre, with peak years topping out at around 40.5 tons per acre. In addition to this, the average sugar content of sugar beets grown in Switzerland is 15 percent. These factors limit the amount of land that needs to be cultivated in Switzerland for the production of a given amount of sugar, which also helps to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
