Sustainable fuels

Our refineries need to generate considerable amounts of heat, especially during the juice extraction and evaporation stages. We operate a new wood-fired CHP system to supply the lion’s share of the necessary heat at our refinery in Aarberg. The system burns around 70,000 tons of reclaimed lumber a year, producing around 50,000 megawatt hours of process steam. This lowers our carbon emissions by up to 16,000 tons. In Frauenfeld, the wood-fired CHP plant operated by Bioenergie Frauenfeld supplies our refinery and 8,000 local households with heat. We supplement this supply with biogas produced in the refinery’s wastewater treatment facility. The biogas replaces natural gas and is used for purposes of heating at the refinery. Altogether, our approach to producing and using energy allows us to significantly reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.
