Current studies show: Swiss sugar is more sustainable than sugar from the EU and Paraguay

In a life cycle assessment, Schweizer Zucker AG compared the environmental impact of conventional Swiss beet sugar with beet sugar imported into Switzerland from the EU. The focus was on the overall environmental impact across the entire sugar production chain. The result is that, on balance, Swiss sugar has around 30% less impact on the environment than sugar imported from the EU. This difference is mainly due to beet cultivation and the processing of the beet in the sugar factory. Take a closer look for yourself:

Schweizer Zucker AG also had the ecological and social impact of organic beet sugar and imported organic Fairtrade cane sugar from Paraguay analysed. This study also came out in favour of Swiss organic beet sugar. Here, organic beet sugar has a better ecological balance and clearly better social conditions.
