    According to the Swiss Federal Office of Agriculture’s new climate strategy for agriculture, greenhouse gas emissions from domestic agricultural production are to be reduced by at least 40 percent by the year 2050 compared to the reference year 2025. Moreover, this feat is to be accomplished while covering at least 50 percent of domestic demand. The AgroImpact Association was founded in 2023 to help growers meet the challenges of climate change. AgroImpact’s aim is to promote climate-protection initiatives among Swiss growers and to make their contributions more visible (agroimpact.ch). Swiss Sugar AG has been an active member of the association since the beginning of 2024.

     

    Growers who participate in AgroImpact calculate their carbon footprints and then draft customized action plans for reducing their greenhouse gas emissions and/or increasing the amounts of their carbon capture and storage. Growers who succeed in reducing their carbon footprints can earn vouchers for specific crops.

     

    Companies in other sectors that buy products certified by AgroImpact then effectively pay for the vouchers held by the growers. This incentivizes companies to support the climate-protection and adaptation efforts of the growers while reducing their own carbon footprints.

    Swiss BETA PECTIN is an innovative product that was introduced by Swiss Sugar AG. At its new extraction facility in Frauenfeld, the company has now established itself as an expert for sugar-beet pectin. Swiss BETA PECTIN is natural and 100 percent pure. It is first extracted from de-sugared beet pulp using a new, patented technology and then dehydrated using a sustainable process. The end product is a fine, free-flowing, pale beige powder that can be used in the food industry as a soluble dietary fiber or emulsifying agent when making yoghurt, mayonnaise, various beverages and other products.

    Ethanol

    The Swiss Ethanol Program has enabled the reintroduction of ethanol production to Switzerland after many decades of having to rely exclusively on foreign supplies. As a raw material, ethanol is the basis of many products produced in Switzerland. The sustainable processing of molasses generates byproducts that can be used to produce the finest of Swiss spirits and USP-grade ethanol for Swiss medicines, cosmetics and other special products.

    Biogas

    The wastewater treatment processes at our refineries generate sewage sludge. The sludge is sent to an anaerobic digestion plant where microorganisms convert its organic material into biogas. We use biogas as a renewable source of fuel at our refineries and thereby reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. This practice limits the use of non-renewable sources of energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

    Surplus electricity

    Our sugar refineries operate steam turbines to produce process heat and electricity. This generates more electricity at certain times than is needed for processing. Rather than let this surplus electricity go to waste, our refineries feed it into Switzerland’s national grid. This, in turn, reduces the need to produce electricity from primary sources and helps to protect the environment.

    Using molasses to enrich animal feed

    White beet sugar is produced from the repeated crystallization of concentrated beet juice. This process separates out molasses, that portion of beet syrup that cannot be crystallized into sugar. Owing to its high sugar content of around 50 percent, molasses can be used instead of corn silage to enrich animal feed and provide a growth substrate for the yeast industry.

    Syrup for the yeast industry

    Our evaporation station continues to remove water from the raw beet juice until its sugar content is around 65 percent. Our refinery in Frauenfeld separates out a small percentage of this syrup to sell to the yeast industry. The yeast industry uses it as a growth substrate for yeast cultures. The syrup is an ideal replacement for alternative sources of starch such as corn silage. Given the significant impact of corn-silage production, the use of the beet syrup is a major benefit for the environment.

    Using lime to improve soil quality

    Lime milk and carbonic acid are used to purify the raw sugar-beet juice. The juice then consists almost entirely of sugar and water. By using the lime as a fertilizer to improve acidic and nutrient-poor soil, we reduce our overall need for lime. This helps to conserve domestic lime reserves, limit the need for lime extraction and protect the environment from the harm that is associated with lime mining.
