Sugar beets originated in the Mediterranean region. Their roots grow very straight and deep into the soil. This makes them exceptionally resistant to longer periods of drought. Sophisticated irrigation systems are therefore generally unnecessary. In light of this advantage, Swiss Sugar’s water footprint is smaller than those of growers in many other countries.
